Timing chain and timing belt failure
The timing system keeps the crankshaft and camshaft working in precise synchronisation. When a timing belt snaps or a chain stretches beyond its service limit, the result can be immediate and catastrophic: pistons and valves collide inside the engine, causing damage that is rarely economical to repair without a full professional reconditioning. This is one of the most preventable engine failures in the UK, and one of the most frequently encountered.
A growing number of modern engines use a timing belt that runs in engine oil rather than in open air. Fitted to Ford EcoBlue, PSA PureTech and Fiat MultiAir engines among others, these wet belts release fine particles over time that gradually block the oil pump pick-up strainer. When oil flow is compromised, damage spreads quickly. Addressing it properly means a professional reconditioning: all timing components replaced with genuine OEM parts, the oil system cleaned and the underlying cause corrected so the fault cannot recur.
Head gasket failure and overheating damage
The cylinder head gasket seals the combustion chamber and keeps coolant and oil passages separate. A failing gasket allows these fluids to mix, or lets combustion gases escape into the cooling circuit. The warning signs include persistent overheating, white or sweet-smelling exhaust smoke, a creamy residue beneath the oil filler cap and coolant that disappears with no visible external leak.
Continuing to run an overheating engine warps the cylinder head and risks cracking the block. Our specialists remove the cylinder head, check it for flatness, skim it to the correct surface, pressure test the coolant jacket and refit it with a new OEM gasket set. Where overheating has been prolonged, we assess whether targeted head work or a full professional reconditioning is the more sensible course for your situation.
Oil starvation and bottom-end bearing knock
Every moving surface inside an engine depends on a continuous film of pressurised oil. If that film fails, whether from low oil level, a worn oil pump, a clogged pick-up strainer or excessively extended service intervals, the crankshaft bearings begin to wear at an accelerating rate. The characteristic symptom is a deep, rhythmic knock from the lower engine that becomes more pronounced under load.
A bearing knock signals that serious damage is already occurring. We strip the engine completely, inspect the crankshaft and main journals, regrind the crankshaft to its correct profile where necessary, fit new OEM bearings set to exact running clearances, and recondition the engine so the oil system is restored to full function.
Turbocharger failure
Turbochargers operate at speeds approaching 200,000 rpm and rely entirely on a clean, continuous supply of pressurised engine oil. Contaminated oil, a blocked or restricted feed pipe, infrequent oil changes or any oil leak can lead to turbo bearing failure. Symptoms range from a high-pitched whine and excessive smoke to sudden, complete loss of power.
Fitting a new turbocharger without diagnosing the underlying cause of the oil supply failure simply replaces the symptom. As part of a full professional reconditioning, we investigate the entire oil system, fit a genuine OEM turbocharger with all associated components, and flush the oil galleries before the engine is returned to service.
Injector faults and bore wash
A diesel injector that continues to seep fuel into the cylinder after combustion washes the protective oil film from the cylinder wall. This is known as bore wash, and it dramatically accelerates ring and bore wear, leading to low compression readings, heavy oil consumption and blue or white exhaust smoke. Correcting it properly requires the cylinder bores to be honed to size, new OEM pistons and rings to be fitted, and the offending injectors to be reconditioned or replaced.
Why a professional reconditioning outperforms a quick repair
Many garages will offer a used replacement engine or a budget reconditioned unit as the fastest, most affordable route. These approaches often conceal the root cause of the failure while transferring its consequences to you at a later date. A professional engine reconditioning takes a different approach: every component is measured, every fault diagnosed and every worn surface restored to OEM specification with genuine parts. That is the foundation of an engine that delivers reliable service rather than a repeat breakdown.
